Wood County, Ohio official court routing

Find the Wood County Court That Holds the Record Before You Search

Wood County court records are split among several official systems. Common Pleas cases use the Wood County Clerk of Courts docket; Probate Court has its own records search; Juvenile Court operates separate public access; and municipal matters may belong to Bowling Green, Perrysburg or Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court.

That division matters because a perfectly spelled name can return no result when it is entered into the wrong court system. Start by identifying the case type and location, then search the official court that actually maintains the docket.

Quick answer Use the Wood County Clerk CourtView system for Common Pleas civil, felony criminal, domestic-relations and covered Sixth District Court of Appeals records. Use Probate Records Search for estates, wills, guardianships and related probate matters. Traffic, misdemeanor, eviction and lower-value civil cases may instead be in Bowling Green, Perrysburg or Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court. Records before 1990 may not appear in the Common Pleas online docket.
Best identifier Complete case number
Party Full legal name
Case type Felony, civil, divorce, probate or municipal
Location clue Where the event or filing occurred
Time clue Approximate filing year

Which Wood County Court Should You Search?

The most important part of a Wood County court-record search is choosing the correct court level. The county does not maintain one universal public portal for every case.

Record or case type Likely official court Best starting point
Felony criminal case Wood County Court of Common Pleas Wood County Clerk CourtView docket
Larger civil lawsuit Wood County Court of Common Pleas Clerk of Courts Dockets Online
Divorce, dissolution, custody or support Wood County Common Pleas Common Pleas docket / Clerk of Courts
Estate, will, guardianship, name change or probate matter Wood County Probate Court Separate Probate Records Search
Juvenile, paternity, juvenile custody/support or juvenile traffic Wood County Juvenile Court Juvenile Public Access when the record is publicly accessible
Traffic, misdemeanor, eviction, small claims or lower-value civil Municipal Court Bowling Green, Perrysburg or Tiffin-Fostoria, depending on territorial jurisdiction
Federal civil, criminal or bankruptcy case Federal court PACER, not a Wood County state-court portal
Felony cases can appear at two court levels. A felony may begin with an initial municipal-court proceeding and later continue in Wood County Common Pleas. If a municipal docket stops after a preliminary stage, search the Common Pleas docket before assuming the criminal case ended.

How to Search Wood County Court Records

  1. Identify the likely court level

Decide whether the case is Common Pleas, Probate, Juvenile or municipal. Use the court name printed on any summons, citation, complaint, hearing notice or judgment when available.

  2. Collect the strongest identifiers

Have the full party name, complete case number if known, approximate filing year, case type and the municipality or township connected with the matter.

  3. Open the official search for that court

Do not assume the Common Pleas CourtView system includes Probate, Juvenile or every municipal court. Each of those can require a separate search.

  4. Start with a simple party-name search

Use the legal first and last name you are confident is correct. Avoid adding uncertain middle names, dates or categories until you see whether the first search is too broad.

  5. Use the complete case number when you have it

A case number is normally more precise than a name. Copy it exactly from court paperwork or a verified portal result.

  6. Verify the result before relying on it

Compare the court, case number, filing date, parties, case type, party role and disposition. A same-name result is only a possible match.

  7. Contact the correct clerk when the online record is incomplete

Use the Clerk of Courts, Probate Court, Juvenile Court or municipal clerk for copies, certification, records outside electronic coverage or public documents not displayed online.

Search by Case Number When You Already Know the File

A complete case number is usually the quickest way to reach a single Wood County file. Use the identifier shown by the court rather than guessing its format from another Ohio county.

  • Copy all letters, digits, year codes and leading zeroes shown by the court.
  • Search the issuing court rather than assuming the same number works in every Wood County system.
  • If a municipal felony later moved to Common Pleas, expect the higher court to use its own case number.
  • Keep the verified case number when requesting copies or discussing the file with a clerk.
Online docket timing matters. The Wood County Clerk warns that there can be a delay between a filing or judicial action and its appearance in the public CourtView data. A very recent document may therefore exist even when the online docket has not yet updated.

Wood County Common Pleas Court Records

The legal division of the Wood County Clerk of Courts files, records, indexes and preserves pleadings for the Wood County Court of Common Pleas and the Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals. The Clerk describes itself as the official keeper of these records.

The Common Pleas General Division handles felony criminal cases, civil actions, administrative appeals and domestic-relations matters including divorce, dissolution, allocation of parental rights and support issues.

Important online coverage limit The Clerk states that records before 1990 may not be available through the online CourtView system. For an older Common Pleas case, contact the Clerk rather than treating a blank online search as proof that no case exists.

Wood County Municipal Court Records: Choose by Territorial Jurisdiction

Wood County is served by three municipal-court systems: Bowling Green, Perrysburg and Tiffin-Fostoria. Municipal courts commonly handle traffic, misdemeanor criminal cases, preliminary felony matters, evictions, small claims and qualifying civil cases.

Municipal court When to check it Official search detail
Bowling Green Municipal Court Cases within its 18 municipalities and 15 townships, including Bowling Green and many central/southern Wood County communities. Use the court’s Case Information route; public lookup terminals are also available at the courthouse.
Perrysburg Municipal Court Perrysburg, Rossford, Northwood, Perrysburg Township, Lake Township, Troy Township, Luckey, Millbury and Walbridge. Search by last name/company, first name, middle initial, case number, ticket number, hearing date or filing date.
Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court The paperwork identifies the Fostoria municipal-court route. Use the official Tiffin-Fostoria Record Search; the court warns online data can lag filings and judicial actions.

Bowling Green Municipal Court

Bowling Green Municipal Court maintains criminal, traffic, civil and small-claims records. Its territorial jurisdiction covers 18 municipalities and 15 Wood County townships. The Clerk’s Office is at 711 S. Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, OH 43402, telephone 419-352-5263.

The published Clerk hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m.–noon. The court also says public lookup terminals can be used for criminal/traffic and civil/small-claims searches without a lookup charge.

Perrysburg Municipal Court

Perrysburg’s online record search is unusually specific: it allows a last name or company, first name, middle initial, case number, ticket number, hearing date and filing date. The court warns that online information may lag filings or judicial action by at least 24 hours and may take longer.

For verified information, the court directs users to submit a request or visit 300 Walnut Street, Perrysburg, OH 43551. The published court telephone is 419-872-7900.

Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court

The Fostoria location is at 213 South Main Street, Fostoria, OH 44830, telephone 419-435-8139. The current court website lists Monday–Friday hours of 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and provides a separate Record Search system.

Wood County Probate Court Records

Probate Court is the correct route for wills, estates, guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions, name changes, minor settlements, wrongful-death matters, mental-illness proceedings and marriage licenses. It operates a separate Probate Records Search rather than using the Common Pleas CourtView docket.

Not every Probate record is public. The Probate Court states that adoption records, mental-illness cases and matters ordered sealed by the Court are exceptions to its general public-record access.

The Probate Court Public Records Area is on the second floor of the Wood County Courthouse at One Courthouse Square, Bowling Green, OH 43402. It includes paper and electronic dockets, a public computer terminal, a microfilm reader and printer.

Probate record Published copy cost Note
Marriage record Certified $2; uncertified $0.10/page Verify the amount before mailing payment.
Estate, guardianship, will and other case record Certified $1/page; uncertified $0.10/page Use the specific record and case information in the request.
Birth/death record, 1867–1908 Certified $4.50/certificate; uncertified $0.10/page Birth and death records after 1908 are maintained elsewhere, including the Health Department.

Wood County Juvenile Court Records

Wood County Juvenile Court handles delinquency, unruly and juvenile traffic matters; abuse, neglect and dependency cases; paternity, custody and child-support cases; and certain limited adult matters.

The court provides online access to public dockets and public pleadings in custody, support, paternity and certain adult matters. That does not mean every juvenile record is public. Confidentiality rules and case-specific restrictions still control access.

Juvenile Court 1032 S. Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, OH 43402
Telephone 419-352-3554
Published hours Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Public-copy rule $0.10/page uncertified; $1 per certified document
Requesting your own juvenile record from outside the area The Juvenile Court states that a person requesting their own juvenile record while living outside the area must complete the court’s identity affidavit. Use the current Juvenile Court instructions before mailing a request.

Online Docket, Filed Document and Certified Copy Are Not the Same

An online result helps locate a case, but it is not automatically the complete court file or a certified document. Decide what you actually need before placing a records request.

Record layer What it does Common mistake
Search result Helps identify a court, party, case number and filing date. Treating a same-name result as identity proof.
Docket Shows chronological filings, hearings and court events. Assuming every docket event includes the underlying document.
Filed document Contains the actual complaint, motion, order, judgment or other filing. Assuming every public filing is available remotely.
Certified copy Provides court or Clerk authentication when official proof is required. Treating a web printout as certified.

For a deeper explanation, see Court Record Types Explained.

How to Request Wood County Common Pleas Copies

The Wood County Clerk of Courts provides a Public Records Request form, but the Clerk states that a written request is not mandatory and a requester may decline to identify themselves or state the intended use of the record.

The current Clerk request form lists $0.10 per page for photocopies of public records. Inspection in the Clerk’s office is available without a copy charge. The form lists $1 per certification for certified copies and states that certified copies must be mailed.

Make the request specific. Include the court, case number, party name, filing year and exact document when possible. A precise request can reduce the time needed to identify the right record.

Older Wood County Court Records

Older cases are one of the main reasons a valid Wood County record can be missed by an online-only search.

Common Pleas

Pre-1990 records

The Clerk warns that records before 1990 may not be available in CourtView. Contact the Clerk of Courts for an older Common Pleas file.

Probate

Microfilm and off-site archives

Probate Court maintains older records through its courthouse collection and microfilm, while some originals are stored with the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green State University and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

Municipal

Ask the individual clerk

Municipal systems have their own retention and electronic-coverage histories. Ask the correct municipal clerk when a case predates its online search.

Useful clerk question Ask: “Does your online search cover cases from approximately [year], and is there another index, microfilm collection or archived file route for an older case?”

Why a Public Ohio Court Record May Still Be Missing Online

Ohio’s current court-access rules distinguish direct courthouse access from remote electronic access. The Supreme Court of Ohio reorganized the Rules of Superintendence in July 2026; current Section 11 includes the public-access definitions and rules governing court-record availability.

Most court records are presumed open, but sealing orders, confidentiality laws, personal identifiers and case-specific rules can restrict what appears remotely. Wood County’s own public-record policies also identify categories that are not released in the same way as ordinary public case records.

Public does not mean every page appears online. A docket may exist even when a particular filing is not remotely available. Contact the record-holding court when you need the actual document rather than assuming an absent PDF means the filing does not exist.

No Wood County Court Record Appears? Use This Recovery Order

1. Confirm the court

Check whether the matter belongs to Common Pleas, Probate, Juvenile or one of the three municipal-court systems.

2. Remove optional filters

Search the basic first and last name before adding a guessed middle initial, filing year or case type.

3. Try name variations

Use a former surname, middle initial, no middle name or business name where appropriate.

4. Use the case number

If you have court paperwork, search the issuing court with the complete case number shown there.

5. Check the felony handoff

A felony may appear first in a municipal court and later in Common Pleas under a different case number.

6. Consider the record’s age

Common Pleas online records before 1990 may be unavailable. Probate also has historical records outside the modern online search.

7. Check access restrictions

Sealed, confidential, juvenile and other protected material may not be available through an ordinary public search.

8. Rule out federal court

Federal district, bankruptcy and federal appellate matters use PACER rather than Wood County’s state and municipal systems.

Federal Cases Connected With Wood County Use PACER

Wood County state and municipal portals do not contain federal district, bankruptcy or federal appellate records. Federal matters involving northwest Ohio may belong to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio or another federal court.

If you know it is a federal case, use the site’s PACER Court Records guide rather than searching every Wood County portal.

Verify the Record Before Using It

Online court indexes can contain identical names, preliminary charges, dismissed cases and incomplete document histories. A complaint, criminal charge or preliminary municipal-court appearance is not the same as a judgment or conviction.

  • Verify the court and case number.
  • Check the filing year and case type.
  • Identify the person’s role in the case.
  • Read the final disposition or signed order.
  • Check for a later appeal or transfer when relevant.
  • Request an official copy when consequential decisions depend on the record.
