Use the correct Vermilion County. This article covers Vermilion County, Illinois, where the courthouse is in Danville. Vermillion County, Indiana, is a different jurisdiction with a different court system. An Indiana case cannot be found through the Illinois Clerk’s records search.

How to Search Vermilion County Court Records: 7 Steps

For most ordinary public case lookups, begin online. If you are searching for a particular person, prepare the name as accurately as possible. A case number is preferable when one is available because it helps distinguish similar names.

  1. Open the official county case-search page. Visit the Vermilion County Case Search page on the county government’s website. Follow its Online Case Search link rather than assuming a third-party database is complete.
  2. Allow the search application to load. The Clerk specifically notes that the online system can load slowly. If nothing appears immediately, allow additional time before trying again.
  3. Select the search option offered by the portal. Use the available party-name, case-number or other supported search controls. Portal labels can change; follow the instructions shown in the live application.
  4. Enter the best identifying information. When searching by name, use the correct spelling and any other supported identifiers. If you already have the official case number, begin with that number.
  5. Review the matching case information. Compare available party names, case types, filing dates, case numbers and other displayed details. Do not assume the first same-name match identifies the person you are researching.
  6. Check the docket and available documents. A case listing may provide a procedural history, event entries or disposition information. The actual complaint, judgment, order or transcript may require a separate request.
  7. Contact the Circuit Clerk if necessary. If you cannot locate the record or need an official copy, send a sufficiently specific request to allrecordrequest@vercounty.org or call 217-554-7700.
Before contacting the Clerk: Write down the case number, party name, approximate filing year, case type and the exact document you need. These details help explain the request and reduce the chance of searching the wrong case.

Which Vermilion County Court Records Can You Look For?

The Circuit Court deals with several kinds of matters. Search availability and access restrictions depend on the case type, record age, applicable court rules and whether the record is public.

Record typeWhat the record may containWhere to begin
CriminalCharges, hearings, motions, orders and dispositions when publicly available.County case search; Circuit Clerk criminal division.
CivilLawsuits, claims, orders, judgments and related court events.County case search; civil records staff.
TrafficTraffic case filings, scheduled proceedings and case outcomes.County case search or Clerk traffic division.
Divorce and familyCase-level divorce or family proceedings, subject to confidentiality rules.Circuit Clerk’s family or divorce records staff.
ProbateEstate administration, guardianship and related orders.County case search or probate division.
Small claimsClaims, hearings, judgments and post-judgment activity.Circuit Clerk civil or small claims staff.
Juvenile and restricted mattersConfidential or limited-access proceedings.Contact the Clerk about authorized access; do not assume public search availability.

Criminal case records are not criminal-history reports

A criminal court docket concerns a particular proceeding. It is not the same as a complete statewide criminal-history record. An arrest does not establish guilt, a charge is not a conviction, and a dismissal or other disposition must be interpreted according to the actual case record.

Divorce records versus vital records

Divorce proceedings are court matters, but different types of divorce documentation may be held by different public authorities. If you need the judgment or decree entered in a Vermilion County divorce case, ask the Circuit Clerk about the court document rather than assuming a marriage-record service provides it.

Property deeds are not circuit court filings

The County Recorder handles real-estate recording matters such as deeds and mortgages. Do not use circuit court filing fees or procedures for a property-record request. A lawsuit about a property is a different record from the deed itself.

Request Court Documents, Certified Copies and Transcripts

Finding a case online and obtaining an official court record are different tasks. The search application may identify a case without offering every document in the file. For a copy of an actual filing or order, contact the Clerk and identify what you need.

How to request a court-record copy

1. Identify the case

Provide its case number, party names, filing period and case type if known.

2. Specify the document

Ask for a judgment, order, complaint, docket or other exact filing. State whether certification is needed.

3. Confirm delivery and cost

Ask the Clerk about availability, any fee, acceptable payment method, processing time and delivery options before paying.

For record-search requests, the county publishes allrecordrequest@vercounty.org. Its miscellaneous forms page also lists a Record Search Request form and forms for requesting a report of proceedings (transcript).

Plain copy, certified copy and transcript

DocumentMeaningPractical consideration
Plain copyA reproduction of an accessible court document.May be enough for personal research, but not every official purpose.
Certified copyA copy certified by the authorized record custodian.Tell the Clerk the receiving agency’s requirements before ordering.
Docket / case historyA summary or index of procedural entries.Does not necessarily contain full filings or establish the final legal outcome by itself.
Transcript / report of proceedingsA record of what was said during a proceeding, where such a record exists and can be prepared.Use the court’s specific transcript request process; availability and preparation may differ.

How much do Vermilion County court records cost?

The Circuit Clerk provides an online payment route for record-search fees, but the applicable amount can vary with the service requested. The reviewed official case-search page does not establish one universal price for every search, copy or certification.

Before requesting service, verify the current fee with the Clerk. Ask separately about research, document copies, certification, transcripts, postage and any payment-processing charges. Do not confuse the Recorder’s deed-copy charges with Circuit Clerk court-record fees.

Do not send payment without instructions. The Clerk’s official website includes a Court Money payment option for record-search fees. Verify the correct amount and payment reference with the office first. A paid search does not necessarily include certified copies or transcripts.

Why a Vermilion County Court Record May Not Appear Online

An unsuccessful search does not automatically mean that the case never existed. Online systems have coverage rules, indexing limitations and access restrictions. The correct recovery method depends on what is missing.

Technical help for the online search

The official case-search page refers users to the eMagnus Help Desk at 1-866-511-2892 for assistance or troubleshooting. This is technical support for the search system, not a substitute for the Clerk when you need to verify the legal content of a case.

Older and archived court records

If you are looking for an older divorce, estate, civil judgment or criminal proceeding, prepare an approximate filing year and any available docket or case number. Ask the Circuit Clerk whether the record is searchable electronically, stored in another format or subject to retention and access rules.

Do not assume that every historic filing has been digitized or that an archived case can be retrieved instantly.

Illinois eFileIL and re:SearchIL: Different From the County Case Search

Illinois maintains statewide court technology services, but they do not replace the need to identify the court that holds the case.

Submitting documents

eFileIL

eFileIL is Illinois’s statewide electronic filing system. E-filing is generally required in civil cases, subject to recognized exceptions, including certain circumstances involving incarceration, disability, specified sensitive proceedings or a documented good-cause exemption.

eFileIL is primarily a filing service, not the Vermilion County public case-lookup page.

Document access

re:SearchIL

Illinois’s statewide e-services information describes re:SearchIL as a document-access system operating under the Supreme Court’s Remote Access Policy.

Public access depends on the court level, case and document category. Do not assume every Vermilion County circuit court filing is downloadable by every visitor.

A distinction for appellate records

Illinois expanded free public remote access to qualifying non-confidential reviewing-court documents effective May 1, 2025, including eligible documents in reviewing-court cases filed on or after April 1, 2025. Reviewing courts are the Supreme Court and appellate courts. That announcement should not be interpreted as unrestricted online access to all Vermilion County trial-court records.

Do you need to file a court document?

Use Illinois Courts’ official e-filing guidance, including its self-represented litigant resources and exemptions. Filing a document, finding a case, ordering a copy and making a payment are separate actions; use the correct service for each.

Public Access, Confidential Records and Responsible Use

Illinois court records are subject to laws, court rules and access limitations. Some information may be publicly searchable while confidential filings, protected personal details or restricted proceedings remain unavailable to ordinary public users.

  • Sealed records: Public access may be prohibited by court order or law.
  • Juvenile cases: Access is frequently restricted and must be determined under the applicable rules.
  • Expunged records: Records subject to expungement or sealing requirements cannot be treated as ordinary open records.
  • Personal information: Public availability does not justify harassment, identity misuse or unnecessary publication of sensitive details.
  • Case outcomes: A charge, complaint, filing or docket entry must not be misrepresented as a conviction or final judgment.
