Sacramento County court records are maintained by the Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento. The court has several search systems because the information available in a criminal case is not the same as the information available in a civil, family law, probate or traffic case.

Use a case number first when you have one. If you search by name, compare the case type, filing date and other available details before treating a result as the right case. A similar name alone is not enough to identify a person.

Important criminal records change for 2026 Sacramento Superior Court introduced a new criminal case management system effective August 10, 2026. The court’s current Criminal Portal Public Users Guide should be used for criminal searches rather than relying on older screenshots or outdated portal instructions.

The search is routed through the Limited Civil case type. Do not assume these cases can be found with a broad name-only search.

How to Search Sacramento County Court Records in 7 Steps

This process helps you find the relevant case, check the docket and determine whether a separate document request is needed.

  1. Identify the case type. Decide whether the matter is criminal, civil, family law, probate, traffic, small claims or another proceeding. The court division determines the correct search system.
  2. Open the official search. Visit Sacramento Superior Court’s Case Search directory and choose the matching case type. Follow the updated criminal portal instructions for criminal matters.
  3. Enter the available search information. Use the complete case number where known. Otherwise, enter a party name, filing date, citation number or other supported information. Required fields vary.
  4. Check the result carefully. Compare filing dates, party names, case numbers and case types before treating an entry as a correct match.
  5. Read the case history. Review available registers of actions, case events, hearings, orders and document listings. A docket entry is not necessarily the full document.
  6. Request unavailable documents. If a public document is not downloadable, use the appropriate division’s records procedure. Specify the case number and the document requested.
  7. Verify the current status. Confirm important case outcomes with the court. Request a certified or exemplified copy when the receiving organization requires official authentication.
What to prepare before searching

Useful information includes the full case number, parties’ names, case type, approximate filing date and known document title. For a traffic lookup, the court may require a citation or case number together with a date of birth.

Sacramento County Criminal Court Records

The Criminal Division handles felony and misdemeanor proceedings in Sacramento County. Its Criminal Records Unit assists with copies of court records, while the new criminal portal provides supported case-search functions.

Criminal Case Portal: August 2026 Update

Sacramento Superior Court states that the new criminal case management system took effect August 10, 2026. Begin with the official Criminal Records page and its linked public user guide for current search instructions.

Public access to a case index does not mean every criminal filing is available remotely. California Rule of Court 2.503 generally restricts remote public access to underlying criminal case records, subject to its stated exceptions.

Criminal Name Searches Without a Case Number

If you cannot find the case number, Sacramento Superior Court provides the Local Criminal Records Name Search Request, form CR-278A. The court charges $15 per name search. Requests can be submitted using the authorized in-person, mail or email methods described by the Criminal Records Unit.

The court also identifies CR-278A-1 for multiple-name requests and CR-278C when requesting copies. These forms have different purposes, so use the correct form rather than sending a general inquiry without the requested information.

Older Criminal Cases

The Criminal Records Unit states that its staff research service covers Sacramento County criminal cases from 1989 to the present. For cases older than 1989, the court points users to public microfiche at the Criminal Records Unit or other official assistance.

Some criminal case files are stored off-site. The court says off-site filed orders may take up to 30 days to retrieve. Once the requested file arrives, it is held at the courthouse for 10 days. Contact the unit to check its delivery status rather than arriving before retrieval is confirmed.

The court does not perform criminal-record research by telephone. Its records page explains written requests, payment instructions, and required forms.

For mail requests, the court instructs requesters to include the required payment information and a self-addressed stamped envelope, or account for postage charges. It also provides a credit-card authorization option. Do not mail cash. Check the latest payment instructions before sending a check or authorization form.

Charges and dispositions are different

Criminal charges, hearings, pleas, dismissals, verdicts and sentencing are separate events. A charge is not proof of a conviction. If you need a final disposition, confirm it with the court rather than interpreting an initial docket entry as the outcome.

Sacramento County Civil Court Records and Lawsuits

Civil cases include disputes involving contracts, property, money, personal injury and other noncriminal legal matters. The court provides case-search access for eligible civil matters, although account creation may be required for the online search.

Viewing Civil Court Files in Person

Most civil files are public unless access is restricted by law or court order. Sacramento Superior Court keeps physical civil files at an off-site retention facility and states that delivery to the downtown courthouse takes approximately 10 business days.

Bring valid picture identification when viewing a physical file. Contact the Civil Records Unit before traveling if the file must be retrieved.

Requesting Copies of Civil Court Records

The court accepts records requests through its Civil Records Unit. Prepare the case name and number, the documents needed and their filing dates if available.

For mail requests, use the court’s current Request for Copies of Civil Records form, CV/E-300, and follow the payment instructions on the Civil Records page. The court states that written requests take approximately four to six weeks to complete.

A file can be publicly viewable without every document being available through remote download. For a certified judgment or order, specify that certification is required.

Sacramento County Family Court Records

Family court records may involve divorce, legal separation, support, custody, parentage and domestic violence cases. Sacramento’s Public Case Access System offers family law searches by name, case number and filing date.

When you only know a party name, use a filing-date range if available to narrow the results. If you have a case number, search by that number to reduce confusion between people with similar names.

Family Case Participants and Document Access

The court’s Public Case Access instructions explain that family law case participants and certain authorized users can receive case-specific document access through a court-assigned subscription. This may include eligible findings and orders after hearing, minute orders and Family Court Services reports.

These permissions do not create unrestricted public access. Confidential records, mediation information and protected documents remain subject to court rules.

Family Law Public Case Access ↗

Older Family Court Records

Sacramento Superior Court’s Family Court Records instructions explain storage and retrieval for historical family law case files. The court directs requests for files from before 1937 to the Center for Sacramento History.

Some more recent physical files are stored off-site and may need advance retrieval. The court’s file-request process is separate from simply viewing the electronic case index.

Official Family Court Records Directory ↗

Sacramento County Probate Court Records

Probate cases may concern estate administration, wills submitted in court proceedings, conservatorships, guardianships and related matters. The court’s Public Case Access System provides eligible probate case information and available documents.

The official case-search directory notes that probate searches may require an account. Where supported, search by case number or relevant party information, then check the case type and filing date.

Guardianship, conservatorship and other sensitive matters can contain restricted documents. If you need a certified probate order, letters issued by the court or another official record, use the Probate Records instructions instead of assuming an online download is sufficient.

Choose Probate Records from the Official Directory ↗

Sacramento County Traffic Court Records and Citations

Traffic cases use a dedicated official Public Case Access system. Depending on the search route, users can search with a driver’s-license number, citation number or case number. Some methods require date of birth as well.

The service can display eligible citation information, available documents and options relating to a traffic matter. An amount owed for a traffic ticket is separate from the court’s free online document-search service.

The court lists its Traffic Virtual Public Counter from Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding court holidays. Phone assistance follows a different published schedule, so review the official Traffic Records page before contacting the court.

Sacramento County Court Records Search and Copy Fees

There is an important difference between an online public case search and a clerk-assisted document request. Sacramento Superior Court says fees for online searches and available document downloads through Public Case Access have been discontinued. Other court records services may still require payment.

Do you need a certified record?

A downloaded court PDF is not automatically a certified copy. When a receiving agency requires official proof, ask the appropriate court division for a certified or exemplified record and confirm what form of authentication is accepted.

California Rule of Court 2.503

California Rule of Court 2.503 governs public electronic access to many trial-court records. It distinguishes public case indexes, calendars and registers of actions from underlying documents that may be restricted from remote access.

In particular, certain family law, criminal, juvenile, guardianship, conservatorship and related records generally cannot be provided to the public remotely in the same way as ordinary civil case documents. The rule contains specific exceptions, including provisions for certain extraordinary criminal cases.

Records made confidential by law or sealed by court order are subject to additional restrictions. Courthouse availability is not the same as permission to release confidential information.

Records That Are Not Sacramento Superior Court Case Records

Some Sacramento County public records are maintained by other authorities. Using the wrong office can lead to missing results or unnecessary requests.

  • Recorded property deeds: These are typically maintained by the Sacramento County Clerk/Recorder, not the civil case-search system.
  • Jail and arrest information: Sheriff’s or law-enforcement records are distinct from criminal court case histories.
  • Federal lawsuits and bankruptcy: Federal cases are generally searched through the appropriate federal court or PACER.
  • California appeals: Appellate case information may be maintained in a separate court system.
  • Vital records: Birth, death and marriage certificates have their own custodians and legal access requirements.

If a case occurred outside Sacramento County, start with the relevant court’s jurisdiction rather than assuming all California records are searchable from this county portal.
