Search New Mexico Court Records by Name and Follow the Case to the Correct Court
New Mexico’s public Case Lookup lets the general public search current electronic case information without registration. It covers New Mexico appellate, district, magistrate and Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court records, plus limited municipal court information. The public system is a case-information search—not a complete document repository.
Choose the Right New Mexico Court Record Route
New Mexico provides more than one official access method. Which route is useful depends on whether you only need public case information, need actual case documents, are a party to a case or are looking for an older record.
New Mexico Case Lookup
Use Case Lookup for public electronic case information. No account is required.
Best starting point for party-name and case-number searches.
Open Case Lookupre:Search®NM
Registered users who meet New Mexico Judiciary access requirements can use re:Search®NM for Odyssey case information and documents according to their assigned user profile and access tier.
Access is broader than ordinary public Case Lookup but is not unrestricted.
Open re:Search NMPre-1997 Records
New Mexico Courts directs users seeking records before 1997 to an online record-request process rather than treating Case Lookup as complete historical coverage.
The record-holding court remains important for older case files.
Request Court RecordsSelf-Represented Litigant Access
A self-represented party marked Pro Se can apply for re:Search®NM access to cases in which that person is a party.
Registration and the required SRL application are separate steps.
SRL Access InstructionsRecord-Holding Court Clerk

The Administrative Office of the Courts is not the custodian of individual court case files.

State and federal court systems use different case numbers and custodians.
PACER GuideHow to Search New Mexico Court Records by Name in 7 Steps
A name search is a discovery tool. It becomes reliable only after you confirm that the result belongs to the intended person and that you are looking at the correct court and case.
Open the official Case Lookup system
Use New Mexico Courts’ Public Access Case Lookup. General public access does not require account registration.
Search the party name
Enter the name information you know. If you already have a full case number, use it instead because it is usually more precise than a name-only search.
Avoid uncertain filters at first
Start broadly enough to avoid excluding the case because of an incorrect date, court location or spelling assumption.
Compare possible matches
Check the court, filing date, case type, party names, attorneys, judge and case status before relying on a result.
Review the register of actions
Use the case history to identify filings, hearings, dispositions and other events associated with the case.
Save the complete case number
Case numbers help court staff locate the correct file and reduce confusion when several people have similar names.
Request the actual record when needed
If you need the underlying complaint, judgment, decree, order or certified copy, contact the record-holding court or use an authorized registered-access route.
For a broader search workflow, see How to Look Up Court Records by Name or Case Number.
What New Mexico Case Lookup Covers—and What It Does Not
New Mexico Courts describes Case Lookup as the general public’s access point for current electronic court records. Its coverage is broad, but several important limitations affect what a search result can show.
| Record area | Public Case Lookup | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Supreme Court & Court of Appeals | Included case information | Underlying documents are not supplied through ordinary Case Lookup. |
| District Court | Included | Sealed and confidential material remains unavailable. |
| Magistrate Court | Included | Use the filing court for actual file-copy requests. |
| Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court | Included | Metro Court is a limited-jurisdiction court, not a substitute for Second Judicial District Court. |
| Municipal Court | Limited data | State guidance says municipal data is limited to historic criminal Domestic Violence and DWI convictions beginning September 1, 1991. |
| Case documents | Not available | Use the court clerk or an authorized re:Search®NM profile when applicable. |
| Records before 1997 | Separate route | New Mexico Courts directs users to submit an online records request. |
Which New Mexico Court Is Most Likely to Hold the Case?
The same person’s name can appear in several courts, and some searches fail because the user is looking at the wrong court level. New Mexico has thirteen judicial districts plus magistrate, Metropolitan, municipal, probate and appellate courts.
District Court
District courts hear broad civil matters such as tort, contract, real-property and estate disputes. They also handle domestic relations, mental-health matters, appeals from lower courts and agencies, and other cases assigned to courts of general jurisdiction.
Magistrate Court
Magistrate courts hear civil tort, contract and landlord-tenant matters within their jurisdictional limit, felony preliminary hearings, misdemeanors, DWI/DUI and other traffic cases.
Metropolitan Court
Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court handles limited-jurisdiction civil matters, felony first appearances, misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, domestic-violence cases and traffic matters.
Municipal Court
Municipal courts handle petty misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, traffic cases and other municipal ordinance violations. Public statewide Case Lookup contains only limited municipal information.
Probate Court
County probate courts handle informal probate and uncontested estate matters. Contested estate matters generally move to District Court.
Supreme Court & Court of Appeals
New Mexico’s appellate courts review qualifying lower-court cases. Their case information is included in the statewide electronic Case Lookup system.
Case Lookup vs. re:Search®NM
The two services solve different problems. Case Lookup is designed for the general public. re:Search®NM is a registered-access system that can provide Odyssey case information and documents based on the user’s approved profile.
| Feature | Case Lookup | re:Search®NM |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | Not required | Required |
| Public case information | Yes | Yes, according to user profile |
| Case documents | No | Available according to authorized access |
| Self-represented party | Public information only | May apply for access to cases where marked Pro Se |
| Confidential records | Not publicly available | Access depends on tier, legal authority and case type |
How to Find New Mexico Court Records From Before 1997
New Mexico Courts specifically directs users seeking records before 1997 to submit an online request. This is important because an empty modern Case Lookup search does not establish that an older case never existed.
Prepare these details
- Full party names
- Approximate filing year
- County or city
- Likely court type
- Case number if known
- Type of case
- Exact document needed
Ask the custodian
- Whether the file remains at the courthouse
- Whether it is stored off-site
- Whether a paper or microfilm index must be searched
- Whether copies can be emailed or mailed
- What certification charge applies
Getting Copies, Certified Copies and Court Audio
Use Case Lookup to identify the case first, then contact the record-holding court for the actual document. A case summary or docket screen is not the same as a certified copy.
Published New Mexico district-court record-request pages commonly list ordinary copies at $0.35 per page, certification at $1.50 per document plus copy charges, exemplification at $4.50 per document plus copy charges, and audio on CD at $4.00. Confirm the amount with the specific court before ordering because the responsible court controls its current request process.
For reference or personal use
Ask for the exact filing identified from the docket rather than ordering an entire file unless you genuinely need it.
For formal proof
Certification adds the court clerk’s authentication to the reproduced document. Verify with the receiving agency whether certification is required.
For specialized formal use
Exemplification is a higher authentication level. Order it only when the receiving authority specifically requests it.
Request from the court
Courts may provide recordings of qualifying hearings. Give the hearing date, judge and case number to help staff identify the correct recording.
Important Privacy and Access Limits in New Mexico Case Lookup
Public judicial access does not mean every detail of every case can be published online. New Mexico intentionally removes or suppresses several categories from ordinary public access.
Personal identifiers
New Mexico Courts says social security numbers, address information and other personal identifying information are not available through public Case Lookup for security reasons.
Juvenile criminal cases
The Judiciary states that juvenile criminal cases have not been displayed in public Case Lookup since July 1, 2007.
Family Violence Protection Act cases
New Mexico Courts states that Family Violence Protection Act Order of Protection cases have not been displayed in Case Lookup since July 1, 2008.
Non-public court material
Sealed records and records made confidential by statute, court rule or court order are outside normal public access.
What New Mexico Case Lookup Can Tell You About a Case
Public Case Lookup is useful for reconstructing the procedural history of a case. New Mexico Courts has described its electronic case information as including items such as parties, attorneys, the presiding judge, scheduled hearings, the register of actions and criminal charges and dispositions.
| Information | Useful for | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Party name | Finding possible cases involving the searched name. | That a matching name proves identity. |
| Case number | Identifying the exact court file. | That every document is available online. |
| Charge | Seeing what criminal allegation was filed. | That the person was convicted. |
| Disposition | Understanding how a charge or case was resolved. | That no later appeal or modification occurred. |
| Register of actions | Following filings, orders, hearings and other docket events. | That the docket entry contains the full document text. |
For help distinguishing a docket from the underlying filing or judgment, see Court Record Types Explained and the Court Records Glossary.
No New Mexico Court Record Found? Check These Possibilities
A zero-result search should trigger a routing check rather than an immediate conclusion that no record exists.
A useful question for the clerk is: “Does online Case Lookup cover a case from approximately [year], and if not, what is the correct way to request the older file?”
Inspection of Public Records Requests and Court Case Files
New Mexico Courts provides an Inspection of Public Records Act request system. The Judiciary states that every person has a right to inspect public records maintained by New Mexico Courts, subject to applicable legal restrictions.
For a court case file, the most important detail is the custodian. Civil and criminal case records are maintained by the court where the case was filed—not by the Administrative Office of the Courts as a central case-file repository.
