Criminal/traffic name searching uses the same first/last-name approach and also offers case-number and birth-date routes.
- Open the plausible result and save the full case number. The case number is the safest key for later docket checks, clerk questions, copy requests and court-date verification.
- Read beyond the first event. Check the status, later docket entries, disposition information and upcoming dates rather than assuming the first charge, complaint or filing tells you the final result.
- Verify identity and official status when it matters. The Criminal/Traffic portal warns that an alias search can display the person’s primary name. If identity is uncertain, or an official result is required, confirm through the Circuit Clerk instead of relying on a same-name hit.
- Move to the correct next service. Request a clerk copy or written record check for official documentation; use manual/archival routes for older records; use the Fourth Appellate District/re:SearchIL for qualifying appeals; and use PACER for federal cases.
How McLean County Case Numbers Are Formatted
If you already have a case number, enter it exactly in the county’s 12-character format—without spaces or hyphens. The number combines the four-digit filing year, a two-character case code, and a six-digit sequence including leading zeros.

Copies, Certification and the McLean Criminal/Traffic Record Check
A portal result is useful for locating the file, but it is not automatically a certified document. If another organization needs formal proof, first ask whether it requires a plain copy, a certified copy or a written disposition/record check.

For criminal or traffic searches before 1991, start with the Circuit Clerk because the county specifically provides two routes: a prepaid written request at $6 per year, per person, or an in-person search of the manual books.
For historical probate and will research, the Illinois State Archives provides McLean County indexes through the Illinois Regional Archives Depository at Illinois State University. The Probate Record Index covers 1834–1934 and the Will Record Index covers 1838–1940. Those specialized indexes do not replace the Circuit Clerk for modern cases.
Sealed, Impounded and Nonpublic McLean Court Records
Not every court file is remotely or publicly available. McLean’s Civil Division says Mental Health cases and some Miscellaneous Remedy subcategories are not public. The Family Division says adoption records and all juvenile case types are impounded and are not public records.
