Search Lake County Cases in the Clerk’s System—Then Get the Docket or Copy You Actually Need

Lake County trial-court records are maintained by the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller. The Clerk’s ShowCase Web system lets public users search many Lake County cases online without creating an account.

The important part is choosing the right search, verifying that the result is the correct case, and knowing when an online docket is not enough. Older records, restricted images, formal record searches, certified copies, Florida appeals and federal cases use different routes.

Quick answer Start with the official Lake County ShowCase case search. Search by complete case number when you have it; otherwise use the party’s last and first name. If spelling is uncertain, ShowCase provides SoundEx and partial-name searching in addition to Exact search.

Choose the Official Route That Matches What You Need

A Lake County court-record search can mean several different things. Use the Clerk for the underlying Lake County trial-court case, Florida ACIS for an appeal, and PACER only when the matter is in federal court.

Use Florida’s Appellate Case Information System when the record you need is an appellate docket or an available appellate document rather than the Lake County trial file.

A federal case is not stored in Lake County ShowCase simply because a party lives in Lake County. Use PACER or its nationwide Case Locator.

Florida routing rule: for county and circuit trial cases, start with the clerk in the county where the case was filed. For statewide guidance, see the site’s Florida Court Records Search by Name page.

If you reached this page while searching a different Lake County, use the multi-state Lake County court-record router instead. Lake County in Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and California use different court systems.

How to Search Lake County, Florida Court Records Online

The official ShowCase portal supports both name and case-number searching. Begin broadly, then narrow the result only with details you know are correct.

Open the official Lake County ShowCase search

Go directly to the Lake County Clerk’s ShowCase Web application. The Clerk’s user guide states that members of the public can search online court records without creating a username or password.

Choose Case Search

Use Case Search for a party name or case number. If what you have is a citation number, ShowCase also provides a separate Citation Search.

Enter the strongest identifier you know

If you have the complete case number, use it first because it is more precise than a common name. For a person search, enter the surname in Last Name and the given name separately in First Name.

Choose Exact, SoundEx or Starts With

Exact is the default when the spelling is known. Choose SoundEx when the spelling may differ. For a partial name, the Clerk’s guide instructs users to choose Starts With and use % as the wildcard—for example, SMI%.

Narrow only after the broad search

If there are many matches, add a known court type, status, judge or date range. Avoid adding uncertain filters at the beginning because one wrong detail can hide the correct case.

Open the result and verify the case

Compare the case number, court type, party name and role, filing information, docket history and disposition information. A matching name by itself is not enough to establish that the record belongs to a particular person.

Get the docket entry, document or certified copy you need

If a document image is not immediately viewable, follow the portal’s current request process. If you need a formal Clerk search or certified copy, move to the Clerk’s Records Search Request rather than treating the public search screen as an official certification.

Use the Search Mode That Fits the Name

Exact

Spelling is known

Use Exact when you know how the party name is indexed. This is the default ShowCase name-search option.

SoundEx

Spelling may be uncertain

SoundEx is designed to help find similar-sounding names that may have been entered with a different spelling.

Starts With

Only part of the name is known

Use a percent sign as the wildcard. The Clerk’s guide gives SMI% as an example of a search that can return surnames beginning with those letters.

Business-name tip: the Clerk’s ShowCase guide instructs users searching a company to place the company name in the Last Name field. For a partial business name, enter the known portion followed by % and select Starts With.

Other fields available in ShowCase

The current portal can expose additional fields such as date of birth, citation number, incident number, arrest date, status, judge and court type. Use extra identifiers only when you already know them and they materially help distinguish similar results.

Check the Clerk’s Published Court-Record Coverage Dates

The Lake County Clerk publishes a court-database coverage table by case category. The dates below reproduce the dates currently listed by the Clerk; they should be used as coverage guidance rather than as a promise that every docket entry or document image is remotely available.

Lake County Clerk published court-database coverage dates
Case category Clerk-listed date Department phone
Criminal — Felony January 1, 1989 (352) 742-4126
Criminal — Misdemeanor January 1, 1989 (352) 742-4128
Domestic Relations September 4, 1984 (352) 742-4140
Injunctions / Domestic Violence September 4, 1984 (352) 742-4319
Probate / Guardianship September 1, 1986 (352) 742-4122
Small Claims January 1, 1985 (352) 742-4145
Traffic January 1, 1997 (352) 742-4133

If a case may predate the online database range, do not conclude that it never existed. Use the Clerk’s formal records-search procedure or contact the appropriate court division.

A Search Result, Docket Entry and Court Document Are Different Things

Case search result

This identifies a possible case and may show the case number, parties, court type, status or filing information. Treat it as a route into the file, not as a complete explanation of what happened.

Docket

The docket is the chronological activity record. It can show filings, orders, hearings and other events, but a docket description is not necessarily the same thing as reading the filed document.

Document image

Some docket entries have an image available remotely. Other images may be restricted or may require a review before they can be released for online viewing.

Certified copy

A certified copy is issued through the Clerk and is different from printing a screen or downloading an ordinary image. Use the certification route when an agency, court, employer permitted by law, or other recipient specifically requires certification.

What “View on Request” means

The live ShowCase system includes a View on Request Document process for some records. When used, the requested image must be inspected before it becomes available for viewing. The portal can notify you by email when it is ready, or you can return later and check the case again.

An image requiring review is not automatically the same thing as a sealed case. Florida court-record access can depend on the case type, the document, the user’s role and confidential information contained in the record.

Formal Lake County Record Searches, Copies and Certification

When an ordinary ShowCase search is not enough, the Lake County Clerk provides a formal Records Search Request. The request covers Lake County, Florida cases only and can be submitted using the current Clerk form.

$2 per name, per calendar year searched
$1 per page for printed copies
$2 per page for certified copies
7–10 business days stated for search results

The Clerk’s current instructions allow a records-search request to be mailed, delivered to the Lake County Courthouse, or emailed to courtrecordssearch@lakecountyclerk.org. Questions about that records-search service can be directed to (352) 742-4336.

Fees and procedures can change. Use the current Clerk form as the controlling source before sending payment, especially if you need several years searched or multiple names.

Why Some Lake County Records or Images Are Not Public Online

Florida provides broad public access to judicial records, but access is subject to confidentiality laws, court rules and court orders. The Lake County Clerk’s ShowCase guide specifically states that sealed and expunged cases are not viewable through the system.

  • Sealed cases may not appear to public users.
  • Expunged cases are not viewable through ShowCase.
  • Juvenile records are confidential under the Clerk’s stated search procedure.
  • Some document images require review before remote release.
  • A registered user may have different access from an anonymous public user.
  • A party or attorney may have access rights that a general public user does not.

The Clerk’s records-search instructions state that juvenile records can be released only as permitted to the individual searched or a legal guardian with picture identification. Do not try to bypass a confidentiality restriction by changing search terms or using a different public portal.

Florida Rule of General Practice and Judicial Administration 2.420 governs public access to judicial branch records and includes confidentiality provisions. When a specific record is restricted, the rule, statute or court order controlling that record takes priority over what a search interface happens to display.

Do Not Confuse Court Records With Lake County Official Records

The Lake County Clerk maintains more than one type of public record. A judicial case and a recorded property instrument are not searched in the same system.

Use Court Records / ShowCase for

  • Civil lawsuits
  • Criminal cases
  • Family and domestic-relations cases
  • Probate and guardianship cases
  • Small claims
  • Traffic cases

Use Official Records for recorded instruments

  • Deeds
  • Mortgages
  • Liens
  • Recorded judgments
  • Other documents recorded in county Official Records

If you are researching a lawsuit that resulted in a judgment, you may ultimately encounter both systems: the lawsuit belongs to the court case file, while a separately recorded judgment or lien can also appear in Official Records.

Appealed Cases and Federal Cases Use Different Systems

Florida appellate records: ACIS

Florida’s Appellate Case Information System provides public access to dockets and available documents for the Florida Supreme Court and all six District Courts of Appeal. Public searching does not require registration.

ACIS supports case, party and document searching. If a Lake County trial matter was appealed, preserve the Lake County case number but also expect the appellate case to have its own appellate docket information.

Search Florida appellate records

Federal records: PACER

PACER covers U.S. district, bankruptcy and appellate court records. Registration is required for online federal case searching. If you do not know which federal court has the matter, the PACER Case Locator searches a nationwide federal index.

Verify the Person, Case and Outcome Before Using a Record

Names repeat. A party may also appear as a plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, witness or another role. Never treat a same-name hit as proof that a record belongs to the person you are researching.

  • Confirm the court and Lake County jurisdiction.
  • Confirm the full case number.
  • Check the person’s role in the case.
  • Separate a criminal charge from a conviction.
  • Separate a civil complaint from a final judgment.
  • Check the disposition rather than relying only on the filing date.
