Wayne County Court Records Search: Find Cases, Dockets and Copies
Looking for Wayne County court records? Start by identifying the state and the court that handled the case. Wayne County, Michigan includes Detroit and uses several different court systems, while Wayne Counties in Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina and other states have their own official searches.
For Wayne County, Michigan circuit cases, start with the Third Judicial Circuit’s Odyssey Public Access system. For Detroit district cases, use the 36th District Court inquiry. Probate matters have a separate Wayne County Probate Court portal. If your Wayne County is in another state, use the state directory below instead.
Step one: verify the jurisdiction
Which Wayne County Court Records Do You Need?
There is no single nationwide Wayne County court-record database. Selecting the wrong state can produce an empty search or, more seriously, records belonging to a different person. Use the city, courthouse, citation, filing papers or case number to identify the right location.

If yours is not listed, use the appropriate state’s official judiciary website rather than searching a different Wayne County’s portal. The same-name county issue is especially important when a person has a common first and last name.

Wayne County, Michigan: Choose the Correct Court
Wayne County’s Third Judicial Circuit handles circuit-level civil, criminal and family cases. The Wayne County Clerk serves as keeper of the circuit court records. District courts and the Wayne County Probate Court maintain separate records and search options.
| Case or record | Where to start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|

| Circuit criminal cases | Third Circuit Odyssey | Available criminal case information, subject to access limits |
| Detroit district cases | 36th District Court | Public register of actions and schedule |

Third Judicial Circuit: Odyssey Public Access
Michigan’s Third Judicial Circuit provides its public case search through Odyssey Public Access (OPA). The portal offers limited publicly accessible case information, including search results, registers of action and civil judgments. Documents filed by parties are not currently provided as online document images through this service.
Choose the appropriate case-search category, accept the terms of use and search using information supported by the portal. When a possible match appears, inspect the case number, court, parties, filing date, case category and available entries before relying on the result.
The Third Circuit cautions that Odyssey is an informational access tool. A matching name is not proof of identity, and the absence of an online document does not establish that the document is unavailable from the clerk.
Detroit’s 36th District Court
The 36th District Court operates its own Case Inquiry System. It provides public register-of-actions information for cases filed in that court from 1990 onward, together with court-schedule access. The court states there is no charge to use this inquiry and that document images are not supplied.
Do not assume a case belongs in the Third Circuit simply because it arose in Detroit. A district-court matter may remain at that level, while some criminal proceedings can later move to circuit court.
Wayne County Probate Court
Probate records cover matters such as estates, guardianships and conservatorships. The Wayne County Probate Court offers a separate Case Access service. Some public document images are available online, but sealed or confidential records and certain protected-information documents are excluded from remote access.
The Probate Court also issues electronic certified copies. A raised seal is not necessarily required for the electronic certification issued under the court’s established process.
MiCOURT Case Search
MiCOURT is Michigan’s statewide public court-search platform. Its availability depends on the participating court, case type and disclosure rules. A search may cover civil, traffic, criminal, domestic and probate cases, but some case categories are excluded.
MiCOURT also warns that certain participating courts apply a seven-year criminal sentencing display filter. A case missing from that search may still require an inquiry to the court of record.
Practical search workflow
How to Search Wayne County Court Records in 7 Steps
Use these steps for an initial public-record inquiry. A specific portal may offer different fields or require acknowledgment of its terms before displaying search options.
Confirm the state and county
Check the court notice, citation, filing papers, city or original case location. Wayne County, Michigan is different from Wayne County, Ohio or Indiana.
Identify the correct court
Determine whether the matter belongs to circuit, district, municipal, common pleas, superior or probate court. The court named on an existing document is your most useful clue.
Open the verified official search
Use the responsible judiciary, court or clerk website from the state directory or Michigan court table. Review any access terms before submitting a query.
Enter a case number or party name
Use a complete case number when available. Otherwise, search using the permitted name fields and add a date, court or case-type filter when supported.
Inspect the result carefully
Compare court name, parties, dates and case details. Do not identify a person from their name alone. Check whether the result is active, closed or subject to a restricted display.
Read the docket or register of actions
Review filed events, hearings and dispositions. Determine whether the portal offers the underlying documents or only an index of proceedings.
Request an official copy when necessary
Contact the correct clerk or records division, provide the case number and identify the specific order, judgment, filing or certification you need.

The Clerk accepts records requests through its published procedures, including in-person and mail channels. The official site specifies money orders for mailed payments and provides additional instructions for electronic requests. Confirm the current payment instructions before submitting payment.
Review official Clerk records instructions ↗Historical Record Coverage
Wayne County’s published records guidance identifies civil records, including divorce records, dating from 1942. It also describes older criminal records from 1942–1983 for locations outside Detroit and directs users seeking Detroit or later criminal records to the designated criminal records room.
Older documents may need to be retrieved from archives. The county’s records instructions describe a next-business-day retrieval arrangement and limited holding period for archived files. Confirm availability and timing directly before traveling; the online docket’s earliest visible date is not necessarily the oldest record the clerk maintains.
Michigan Probate Court Copy Fees
The Wayne County Probate Court publishes the following rates for requested copies. These are probate-specific prices and should not be assumed to apply to the circuit or district courts.
| Copy or service | Published probate fee |
|---|---|
| Standard copy | $2 per page |
| Certified or exemplified copy | $11 for first page and $1 for each additional page per document |
| Limited staff-generated case listing, up to 50 cases | $10 where the published new-record-creation procedure applies |
Check the court’s official probate copy-request instructions before payment. The court asks requesters to review Case Access first, complete its copy-request form if needed, and wait for staff to calculate the required payment. Access to some documents is restricted by law or court rules.
Have the court name, case number if known, party names, approximate filing date, requested document title, preferred delivery method and contact information. Ask whether you need a standard copy or an officially certified or exemplified document.

Why a Wayne County Court Record May Not Appear
| Problem | Possible explanation | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| No result for a person’s name | Wrong Wayne County, court, spelling or case category | Confirm jurisdiction and try the supported name variations |
| Circuit search has no case | The proceeding may belong to a district or probate court | Try the court-specific official portal |
| Case appears, document is absent | Portal exposes a docket but not document images | Request the document from the record custodian |
| Older case is missing | Records may be archived or outside digital coverage | Ask about legacy indexes or archive retrieval |
| Case details appear incomplete | Data may be delayed or certain material restricted | Contact the clerk before relying on the information |
| Probate or family record is restricted | Confidentiality rules may limit public access | Ask the responsible court whether lawful access is available |
| Two people share a name | Name matching alone is not reliable identification | Verify against permitted case details and official files |
Search by Case Number When Possible
A complete case number is usually a more precise starting point than a common name. Use the exact format provided by the originating court. If a portal rejects it, check whether the number belongs to another court or whether the search requires separate year or case-category fields.
Criminal Court Records and Background Checks
A criminal docket may show allegations, hearings, motions, charges and dispositions, but a charge is not itself a conviction. Online records can be incomplete, and sealed or expunged matters may be withheld from public searches.
PublicCourtRecords.org is an independent information publisher, not a consumer reporting agency. This page and the linked public court searches are not substitutes for legally authorized employment, housing, credit or other eligibility screening services.
Federal Court Cases Are Different
If the case was filed in a United States District Court, Bankruptcy Court or federal appellate court, the county portal is generally not the correct record custodian. Federal electronic case information is accessed through PACER, subject to its account requirements and published fee policies.
Common questions
Wayne County Court Records FAQs
Can I search Wayne County court records by name for free?
Several official court portals provide public searches without a search charge. For example, Detroit’s 36th District Court states that its case inquiry is free. Costs may apply for copies, certification or other services. Availability and fees depend on the state and court.
Are Wayne County Michigan court documents available online?
Some case information is available through the Third Circuit Odyssey search, but party-filed documents are not currently available there as online images. The Wayne County Probate Court separately provides images of certain public probate filings, with restrictions.
How do I find a Wayne County divorce record?
For Wayne County, Michigan, start with the Third Circuit or Wayne County Clerk records instructions. For another state, identify the court that entered the divorce judgment and contact its clerk if the official online search does not provide the document.
Can I request certified copies of court records?
Yes, when the document is eligible for release and the responsible court provides a certification service. Contact the actual record custodian to confirm fees, identification requirements, request methods and certification format.
Why is an old criminal case missing?
The case may predate electronic coverage, be held in an archive, belong to a different court or be unavailable remotely under access rules. Start with the court of record and ask about manual indexes or archival retrieval.
Does no result mean the person has no court record?
No. A missing online result may reflect limited portal coverage, jurisdiction differences, spelling, timing or restricted access. Search results should not be treated as a complete statewide or nationwide record-history check.
Where can I check a Wayne County court date?
Use the calendar or case inquiry system of the court handling the case. In Detroit, the Third Circuit and 36th District Court provide separate resources. For urgent appearance questions, contact the court clerk directly rather than relying solely on an online listing.
