Search Pierce County Court Records Without Choosing the Wrong Court
Pierce County court records are split among Superior Court, District Court, municipal courts and Juvenile Court. The fastest route is to identify the court first, use LINX or Washington Courts to locate the case, then request the actual document from the court that holds it.
Start With the Court That Actually Holds the Record
A Pierce County name search can fail even when a case exists if you search the wrong court system. Superior Court and District Court both use Pierce County’s LINX environment, but municipal court matters may belong to a city court, and juvenile records have separate access rules.
Use LINX for the main case search
Search Pierce County Superior Court criminal, civil, domestic, probate/guardianship and tax warrant/judgment matters by cause number or litigant name. LINX also shows proceedings, attorneys, charges or case activity when those fields are public.
Open LINX searchUse the District Court section of LINX
District Court handles misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors, many traffic and non-traffic infractions, name changes, anti-harassment matters, small claims up to $10,000 and civil damages claims up to $100,000.
District Court case informationCity cases may not belong to Pierce County District Court
Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Bonney Lake, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor and other municipalities may use a municipal court or another designated court. Use the Washington Courts directory or statewide search to identify the correct local court before requesting documents.
Pierce County court directoryUse the Juvenile Court Clerk for juvenile case records
Juvenile record access is more restricted than ordinary adult case access. Washington GR 31 limits public online display of official juvenile offender court records, and Pierce County directs juvenile court record questions to its Juvenile Court Clerk.
Juvenile CourtHow to Search Pierce County Court Records in 7 Steps
Search Pierce County Court Records by Name
LINX allows name searching in both Superior Court and District Court. For Superior Court, enter the name in last name, first name format. You can then narrow the search by year or case type if the result list is too broad.
Superior Court name search
- Enter the last name first.
- Use the legal first name when known.
- Try former surnames or spelling variants if necessary.
- Use the case-type filter only after a broad pass.
- Open the case and copy the exact cause number.
District Court name search
- Use the District Court Cases section in LINX.
- Search by name when the cause number is unknown.
- District Court filters include criminal, civil and infraction categories.
- Use the court-date tools when your immediate goal is a hearing date.
- Contact District Court if the record itself is needed.
If You Have the Case Number, Use It First
A complete Pierce County cause or case number is usually more precise than a name. LINX states that a Superior Court cause number can be entered with or without dashes, so a number such as 02-1-12345-1 can also be entered without punctuation.
Keep the exact court name together with the number. A municipal case number belongs to the municipal court that issued it, and a federal case will not become a Pierce County state-court case simply because a party lives in Tacoma or elsewhere in the county.
Which Pierce County Court Should You Search?
| Record or case type | Likely court | Best starting route | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felony criminal, divorce/family, probate/guardianship, major civil matters | Pierce County Superior Court | LINX | Restricted or sealed material will not be publicly available. |
| Misdemeanor/gross misdemeanor, small claims, many infractions, name changes, civil claims within District Court jurisdiction | Pierce County District Court | LINX / District Court case information | District Court cannot provide Superior or Juvenile Court case records. |
| City ordinance, municipal traffic or misdemeanor matter | Municipal court or designated limited-jurisdiction court | Washington Courts case search / court directory | The county District Court is not the custodian for every city case. |
| Juvenile case | Pierce County Juvenile Court | Juvenile Court Clerk | Public access is more restricted; statewide public display is limited. |
| Federal district, bankruptcy or federal appellate case | Federal court | PACER court-record guide | Federal records are separate from Washington state and Pierce County systems. |
Court Case Records Are Not the Same as a General County Public-Records Request
Pierce County states that court records are not handled under Washington’s general Public Records Act process. Court case records are instead accessed under applicable law and court rules, including Washington General Rule 31.
This matters because sending a Superior Court case request to a generic county public-records form can send you to the wrong office. For Superior Court case files, use the Clerk of the Superior Court. For District Court case records, use District Court. Administrative records of a court are a separate category governed by GR 31.1.
Get Plain or Certified Pierce County Superior Court Copies
The Pierce County Clerk allows eligible Superior Court copies to be requested in person, by mail or electronically from a case’s LINX page using the Purchase Copies option. Ask the organization receiving the document whether it needs a plain copy, a certified copy with seal, or an authenticated/exemplified record before paying.
| Superior Court Clerk service | Current published fee | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Non-certified paper or electronic copy | $0.50 per page | June 11, 2026 Clerk fee schedule. |
| Certified copy with seal | $5 first page; $1 each additional page | Use when the receiving agency requires court certification. |
| Authenticated / exemplified certificate | $5 first page; $1 each additional page; $2 per seal | Confirm the exact authentication required before ordering. |
| Electronic storage medium | $5 per device | Applies when records are supplied on a storage device. |
| Digital or electronic exhibit copy | $25 per exhibit | Different from ordinary page-copy pricing. |
| E-commerce transaction fee | $1.50 | Listed on the current Clerk fee schedule. |
The Clerk states that payment methods differ by request channel. In-person copy requests may use cash, debit card, cashier’s check or money order; mail requests use cashier’s check or money order; electronic LINX copy purchases use credit or debit card. Personal checks are not accepted for the copy-request methods described by the Clerk.
Older Pierce County Superior Court Records Have Different Retrieval Paths
The Clerk uses filing date to determine the practical retrieval route. This is one of the most important Pierce County-specific details when a case appears in an index but the document image is missing.
Start in LINX
For documents filed after January 1, 2002, search the Superior Court case in LINX. Available documents can be selected for online purchase from the case page.
Use the Scan Document Request when needed
For documents filed from January 1991 through December 2001 that are not already in LINX, Pierce County offers a scan request. The Clerk says requested documents are generally made available in LINX within two business days, followed by an email notice.
Call the Clerk
For records filed before January 1991, call the Clerk’s Office at (253) 798-7455. Have the case number and/or litigant names ready.
Prepare the exact document request
The Clerk asks for your contact information, case number, document names, the correct cashier’s check or money order, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Call first to confirm the amount owed.
District Court Records: Search, Hearing Dates and Record Requests
Pierce County District Court provides three different tools for three different tasks: LINX for case searching, an upcoming-case route for scheduled hearings, and a records-request process when you need actual case records.
Find the case
Use the District Court Case Search inside LINX. Search by cause number or name and narrow by year/type only when useful.
Find a court date
The District Court page links to scheduled cases and Washington Courts Find My Court Date. In the statewide tool, choose District and Municipal Courts and select Pierce Co District when that is the filing court.
Request the record
District Court says requests may be submitted by mail, email or online. Include the name, date of birth, case number if known, incident date when relevant, and the exact documents requested.
Expect a fee quote
District Court states that it will respond with the required fees and payment instructions. Do not apply Superior Court Clerk copy fees automatically to a District Court request.
Municipal Court Cases Inside Pierce County Need Their Own Court Route
Pierce County contains multiple municipal courts, and some cities use another court under an interlocal arrangement. Washington Courts’ Pierce County directory is the safest current way to confirm which court serves a city.
Examples in the current directory include Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Bonney Lake, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Buckley, Orting and Roy. Some municipalities are directed to another court, such as DuPont to Lakewood Municipal Court or University Place to Pierce County District Court.
Juvenile Court Records Have Stronger Access Limits
Washington GR 31 says information from an official juvenile offender court record is not displayed on a publicly accessible statewide website. That does not mean every juvenile record is automatically nonexistent or sealed; it means online public access is intentionally limited and the proper Clerk route matters.
Pierce County directs Juvenile Court case-record questions to the Juvenile Court Clerk at (253) 798-7973, located at 5501 6th Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98406. Do not try to work around sealed, confidential or restricted-record protections.
No Pierce County Case Showing? Use This Recovery Ladder
1. Confirm the court
A Tacoma Municipal Court matter will not become a Pierce County District Court case just because both are in Pierce County. Check the court printed on the citation, notice or order.
2. Simplify the name
Remove a middle name, suffix or uncertain spelling. Run last name + first name, then add year or case type one filter at a time.
3. Use the exact cause number
If paperwork shows a case number, search it directly. For Superior Court LINX, try the number with or without dashes.
4. Check record age
For Superior Court, pre-2002 documents may require the 1991–2001 scan workflow or a Clerk request for pre-1991 records.
5. Check access limits
Sealed, confidential, juvenile or otherwise restricted material may not appear in the same way as ordinary public cases.
6. Ask the record-holding court
If you can identify the court but not the online record, contact that Clerk or court rather than repeating searches across unrelated databases.

Read the Record Carefully Before Drawing a Conclusion
A court search result is a pointer to a case, not a background-check verdict. Read the docket and the actual final order or disposition when the outcome matters.
- A charge or criminal filing is not proof of conviction.
- A civil complaint is not proof that the defendant was found liable.
- A motion is not proof that the court granted the request.
- A scheduled hearing can later be changed or continued.
- A docket entry is not always the underlying document.
- An ordinary printout is not automatically a certified copy.
