Search Fulton County Court Records by the Court That Actually Holds the Case

Fulton County court records are split among Superior, State, Magistrate, Probate and Juvenile courts, and city or federal cases can use entirely different systems. A search works much better when you identify the court first and use a name only long enough to find the correct case number.

Quick answer Start with the Fulton County Clerk’s official Find a Case route for Superior, State and Magistrate matters. The linked Fulton County Tyler portal currently requires registration or sign-in before searching, then directs users to Smart Search. Probate estate records use the Probate Court’s ResearchGA route, while federal cases involving Fulton County are searched through PACER.

Which Fulton County Court Has the Record?

Fulton County identifies five courts in its county justice system: Superior, State, Probate, Magistrate and Juvenile Court. Those courts do not all use identical record-access rules, and a city citation or federal lawsuit may not belong in a Fulton County court portal at all.

Superior

Felony, divorce, family and major civil matters

The Superior Court is Georgia’s general-jurisdiction trial court. In Fulton County, the Clerk of Superior and Magistrate Courts maintains Superior Court civil and criminal records.

Superior Court record services

State

Misdemeanors, many traffic cases and civil lawsuits

Fulton State Court handles criminal cases below the grade of felony and civil litigation within its jurisdiction, including tort and contract matters. Its Criminal Division also handles misdemeanor and traffic cases.

Fulton County State Court

Magistrate

Small claims, eviction, garnishment and warrant matters

Fulton Magistrate Court has civil jurisdiction over claims of $15,000 or less and handles matters such as small claims, dispossessory cases, garnishments and personal-property foreclosures. Its criminal work includes warrant applications and preliminary proceedings.

Fulton Magistrate Court

Probate

Estates, wills, guardianships and marriage records

Probate Court handles decedents’ estates, administrators and executors, guardianships and conservatorships, marriage records and several other probate functions. Estate case information can be searched online through ResearchGA after registration.

Probate Records Division

Juvenile

Dependency, delinquency and other juvenile matters

Juvenile Court maintains its own records. Do not assume a juvenile matter will appear in the ordinary adult case-search portal. The Juvenile Court publishes a separate records-request process.

Juvenile Court records FAQ

Municipal

City citations may belong to a municipal court

A traffic or ordinance citation issued by a city can be assigned to that city’s municipal court rather than Fulton State Court. Read the court name printed on the citation before assuming a county search should contain it.

If the notice says Municipal Court of Atlanta, use that court’s own case system and instructions.

Do not route by the person’s address alone. A person who lives in Fulton County can have a case filed in another county, another Georgia court, a city municipal court or federal court. The filing court shown on a complaint, citation, summons, indictment, order or prior docket is the better clue.

How to Search Fulton County Court Records in 7 Steps

Identify the court before entering a name. Use the case type, citation, complaint, order or prior notice to decide whether the matter belongs to Superior, State, Magistrate, Probate, Juvenile, municipal or federal court.
Open the official record route. For Superior, State or Magistrate records, start with the Fulton Clerk’s Find a Case page. For probate estates, use the Probate Records Division route. For federal cases, use PACER.
Register or sign in when the portal requires it. The Fulton County Magistrate, State, and Superior Court Record Search currently requires sign-in or registration before a search can be run.
Start with Smart Search. Use a party name or complete case number. Do not add guessed court, date or case-type filters unless you are reasonably sure they are correct.
Verify the result before assuming it is the intended person. Compare the court, party role, filing date, case type and case number. A matching name by itself is not enough.
Save the complete case number and useful docket entry. Copy the exact number shown by the court and note the document title or filing date you need, such as a final order, disposition, judgment or divorce decree.
Request the document from the correct custodian. Use the Clerk, State Court division, Probate Records Division, Juvenile Court or federal Clerk process that actually controls the requested record.

How to Search by Name Without Creating a False Match

A name search should be treated as a case-discovery tool rather than an identity-verification service. Common names can produce multiple parties, and a public docket can contain allegations, dismissed claims, amended charges or unresolved cases.

If you know only the name

  • Start with the legal first and last name.
  • Try a middle initial separately if needed.
  • Search a former or maiden surname when relevant.
  • Check spelling variations rather than stacking uncertain filters.
  • For a business, search the legal entity name and common business-name variation separately.

If you already have a case number

  • Use the complete number exactly as displayed by the court.
  • Do not substitute a citation number unless the portal specifically accepts it.
  • Keep the filing year and any letters or leading zeroes.
  • If an exact-number search fails, search the party name once and copy the number from the official result.
Best stopping point for a name search: once you have identified the correct court and complete case number, stop repeatedly searching the name. Use the case number for the docket, document request, court-date inquiry and Clerk contact.

Verify the Fulton County Result Before You Rely on It

Check What to compare Why it matters
Court Superior, State, Magistrate, Probate, Juvenile, municipal or federal The same person can appear in different courts for unrelated matters.
Party role Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, decedent or another role A person’s role changes the meaning of the record.
Filing date Year and approximate event date It helps separate same-name results.
Case number Full court-issued number This is the most useful identifier for one case.
Docket activity Later orders, dismissals, amendments and disposition entries The first filing rarely tells the entire procedural history.
Final outcome Final judgment, disposition, dismissal, sentence or other concluding entry A charge is not the same as a conviction, and a complaint is not the same as liability.

For broader explanations of docket entries, judgments and certified records, see the site’s public court records search guide.

State Court Records: Online Documents, Court Dates and Public Access Terminals

Fulton County State Court’s Criminal Division says court dates can be checked through its records portal. The same official FAQ states that publicly available case documents can be viewed through the portal after account registration.

According to the State Court guidance, the first page of an available item can be viewed through the online system, with an option to pay to view or print additional pages. State Court also says records may be viewed without charge using public-access terminals at its locations.

If a document matters for a court appearance, do not rely on a stale screenshot or an old calendar entry. Use the current court notice and confirm material schedule questions with the appropriate court division.

Probate Records Use a Separate Fulton County Workflow

Fulton County Probate Court’s Records Division now directs users to ResearchGA for online access to available estate case information. This is separate from the normal Superior/State/Magistrate routing and requires a registered account.

Estate cases

Online or records request

Use ResearchGA for available estate case information. Estate searches can also be handled in person at the downtown location or by mail under the Probate Records Division’s published process.

Guardianship

Do not assume public online access

The Probate Records Division states that adult and minor guardianship requests cannot be handled online or through the mail because of confidentiality. The office directs these requests to the downtown Records Division in person.

For a mailed estate-record request, the Probate Court says users should provide its Estates Record Request Form. When the page count is unknown, the Records Division asks for the decedent’s name and year of death or estate number plus the documents being requested so the office can determine the request.

How to Get Plain or Certified Fulton County Court Copies

Do not order an entire file when one docket entry will satisfy the request. Before ordering, write down the complete case number, court name, party names, exact document title or docket date, and whether the receiving organization requires a plain, certified or exemplified copy.

Superior and Magistrate Court copies

The Fulton County Clerk currently directs copy requests through the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority eCertification service. The Clerk states that the same service can be used for both certified and plain copies, and that certified copy requests must be submitted through that system.

Open the Georgia eCertification portal. Create a GSCCCA account if you do not already have one.
Submit a new request. Select Fulton County and the appropriate document type.
Complete the record details. Use the exact case number and document information when available.
Wait for processing and payment authorization. The Clerk processes the request before final payment authorization is completed.
Download the completed certified record. The Clerk says the final email contains an authentication link for the purchased electronic certified copy.

Open Georgia eCertification

Published Superior and Magistrate copy fees

The Clerk’s live fee page currently displays a Superior Court fee table labeled July 1, 2024 and a Magistrate table carrying older published amounts. Confirm the current charge on the Clerk’s page before ordering, especially if a request is large.

Copy type Published amount Applies to
Certified / exemplified copy $2.50 first page + $0.50 each additional page Superior fee table; Magistrate table publishes the same copy amount
Uncertified copy without assistance $0.50 per page Superior and Magistrate published tables
Uncertified copy with Clerk assistance $1.00 per page Superior and Magistrate published tables
Faxed or electronic copy $2.50 first page + $1.00 each additional page Current Superior fee table

State Court certified traffic dispositions

For a disposed State Court traffic citation, Fulton County currently publishes a $2.50 certified-copy charge. The traffic guidance says cases from the current and previous year are stored on-site, while older files are kept at an off-site archive and are normally requested back to the office.

The official page says older traffic files should generally reach the office in about one to two business days after an archive request. A mailed request should include the case number, defendant’s full name and date of birth, and a short description of the charges when available.

Special mailing address for this State Court traffic-copy procedure: the current State Court traffic page directs certified disposition requests to Fulton County State Court, ATTN: Criminal Division, 160 Pryor Street SW, Suite J-150, Atlanta, GA 30303. Check the live page before mailing payment because office routing can change.

Probate estate copy fees

Probate record service Current published fee
Certified estate copy $10 certification + $1 per page
Exemplified estate copy $15 process fee + $1 per page
Uncertified estate copy $1 per page
Estate search by mail $10 per search

The Probate Records Division states that its record-request fees are nonrefundable. Check the current Records Division page before sending money, particularly for an estate with an unknown number of pages.

What to Do When No Fulton County Case Appears

Wrong court
A felony or divorce may be in Superior Court, a misdemeanor in State Court, a small claim in Magistrate Court, an estate in Probate Court, or a citation in a city municipal court.
Name mismatch
Try a middle initial, former surname, hyphenated version, suffix, business name or another known spelling. Run variations separately instead of adding several guesses at once.
Case too new
A filing may not appear instantly in every public interface. If you have a recent summons or citation, use the issuing court’s contact information instead of assuming the matter does not exist.
Case is older
An older file can be archived or stored off-site. Ask the record-holding clerk whether the case must be retrieved before it can be inspected or copied.
Document not online
A public docket can exist even when a particular PDF is not remotely available. Ask whether the filing can be viewed at a public-access terminal or requested from the Clerk.
Restricted record
Sealed, juvenile, guardianship and other protected records can have access restrictions. Do not interpret a missing public result as proof that no case or file exists.
Federal case
A federal civil, criminal or bankruptcy case will not be found through a normal Fulton County state-court search. Use PACER and the correct federal court instead.

Run this recovery sequence

  1. Confirm Georgia and Fulton County are actually the filing jurisdiction.
  2. Confirm whether the case is state, municipal or federal.
  3. Identify the likely court from the case type.
  4. Clear uncertain filters and search the basic party name again.
  5. Try known name variations separately.
  6. Use any case, citation or estate number already printed on official paperwork.
  7. Contact the correct Clerk and ask whether the record is archived, courthouse-only or restricted.
Useful Clerk question:
“I am trying to locate case ______ involving ______, approximately filed in ______. If the record is public but not available online, can you tell me whether it is available at a public-access terminal, through an archive retrieval, or by copy request?”

Do Not Send Every Public-Record Request to the County Open Records Portal

Fulton County has a general Open Records Center for records held by county departments, but the County’s own records page provides separate instructions for court-related custodians. Ordinary pleadings, orders, dockets and certified court copies should generally be routed to the court or Clerk maintaining them.

Use Fulton County Court Information Carefully

A court record can describe accusations, disputed claims, dismissed charges, amended pleadings, temporary orders or an unfinished case. Read later docket events and the final disposition before describing what happened.

  • Do not treat a criminal charge as a conviction.
  • Do not treat a civil complaint as a finding of liability.
  • Do not identify a person from a same-name result alone.
  • Do not treat a docket entry as the full text of the underlying document.
  • Do not describe an ordinary portal printout as a certified court record.
  • Do not assume a missing online result proves that no record exists.
  • Do not attempt to bypass sealed, juvenile, confidential or otherwise restricted access.
