Use the Free Riverside Case-Number Search Before Paying for a Name Lookup
Riverside County does not use a completely free name-search system. Court cases are searched through the Superior Court of California, County of Riverside. The official Public Access portal requires an account, charges for searches by a person or organization name, and separately charges for eligible document downloads.
The fastest route is therefore determined by what you already know. If you have the case number, search it without a search charge. If you only have a name, use the paid index once, save every relevant case number, and switch to the free case-number route before reviewing dockets or buying documents.
Start With What You Need to Accomplish
This decision is more useful than searching random combinations of the target person’s name.
Sign in, enter the complete case number and inspect the Register of Actions before purchasing a document.
Follow case-number stepsStart with the smallest credit package. Save the matching case numbers so you do not repeat paid name searches.
Follow name-search stepsFind the dissolution case, locate the final decree or judgment, then choose ordinary or certified copy access.
Find divorce recordsCheck electronic coverage, the 60-day eviction rule, sealed status, purging, courthouse region and court level.
Use recovery stepsUse Riverside Superior Court, Not the County’s General Records Office
The County of Riverside itself tells court-record users that it does not maintain Superior Court records. Civil, criminal, traffic, family-law and probate case information belongs with Riverside Superior Court.
Use for court dockets, filed cases, judgments, court orders, hearings and court-copy requests.
A jail roster answers a custody question. It is not the same record as a criminal-court docket.
A marriage certificate is a vital record. A divorce decree is a Superior Court family-law record.
For a plain-English comparison of a docket, judgment, order and certified copy, see Court Record Types Explained.
Before You Log In: Know Which Actions Are Free and Which Cost Money
Riverside separates the cost of finding a case from the cost of obtaining its documents. This is the most important part of the workflow for avoiding unnecessary charges.
| Action | Current cost | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Search known case number | Free | Use whenever you already have the court case number. |
| 1 self-service name search | $1 | Useful for finding a case number when only a party name is known. |
| 5 name searches | $3.50 | Small batch of legitimate searches. |
| 10 name searches | $5 | Multiple index searches. |
| 75 name searches | $25 | Higher-volume research. |
| Unlimited name searches | $250 / 30 consecutive days | High-volume users; portal rate limits still apply. |
| Court performs name search | $15 per name | Fallback when self-service searching fails. |
The login requirements people commonly miss
- An online account is required before using Public Access.
- Your browser must accept cookies.
- The court warns that popup blocking must be disabled for the portal.
- The system allows a maximum of 30 searches or case lookups in each five-minute period.
- The rate limit applies to manual and automated activity.
- Trying to bypass the limit with scripts, automation or multiple accounts can cause additional restrictions.
Five Portal Tools That Do Different Jobs
Do not use “court record” as if it means one screen. Riverside separates the name index, docket, calendar, documents and probate notes.
| Feature | What it actually provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Index | Matches a person’s or organization’s name to case numbers and filing dates. | Paid name search. |
| Register of Actions | Chronological list of filed documents, filing dates and the party associated with a filing. | Requires the case number; it is a docket, not every document’s full text. |
| Documents | Eligible non-confidential, non-sealed electronic documents. | Requires case number and incurs document-download charges. |
| Calendar | Current and future dates up to seven days, including hearing time, type and department. | Do not use it as the complete historical docket. |
| Probate Notes | Available probate review notes for a case. | Timing cutoff means a late-filed document may not yet be reflected. |
Probate Notes can lag close-to-hearing filings
The court says Probate Notes are last updated in the evening three business days before the scheduled hearing and reflect documents filed at least four court days before the hearing.
If You Have the Case Number, Follow This Search Path
A case number is the strongest practical identifier and avoids the paid name-index step.
- Sign in to Public Access. The account requirement still applies even though the case-number search itself is free.
- Choose Case Number Search. Enter the complete number exactly as it appears on the citation, notice, complaint, judgment or other court paper.
- Open the returned case. Riverside displays the Register of Actions when the case is selected.
- Verify the parties and case type. Check that you have the intended civil, family, probate, criminal or traffic matter.
- Read the docket before opening Documents. Note the title and filing date of the exact judgment, order or pleading you need.
- Use the case number everywhere after that. Keep it for clerk calls, certified-copy requests and later free lookups.
If You Only Know the Name, Use One Paid Search Efficiently
Riverside calls this an index search. It returns case numbers and filing dates associated with the party name entered.
- Create or sign in to the official account. Confirm the portal before purchasing credits.
- Purchase only the number of searches you expect to use. For one lookup, the smallest current option is one $1 credit.
- Enter the legal person or organization name. Use the name likely to have been entered in the court case.
- Compare the returned filing dates and case numbers. A same-name result is not enough to establish identity.
- Open the likely case and inspect its Register of Actions. Compare case type, parties and event history with what you already know.
- Save every relevant case number before leaving. You can then use the free case-number route for future review.
Family Law and Divorce Records Need Their Own Workflow
Riverside’s Family Law Division handles divorce and domestic-partnership dissolution, parentage, custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and domestic-violence matters. Not every document within those matters is publicly available.
How far back can the electronic family-law search go?
The court currently states that almost all family-law cases from April 1992 forward are available through its electronic case-search system.
To find a divorce decree
- Use the case number if you have it. That avoids a paid name search.
- Otherwise search one spouse’s name through the index. Save the matching dissolution case number.
- Open the Register of Actions. Confirm that the parties and filing date match the divorce you intended to find.
- Locate the final judgment or dissolution record. Do not assume a minute entry is the same document as the final decree.
- Ask the receiving agency what copy type it needs. Ordinary electronic access and certified dissolution records have different purposes and charges.
Family-law court locations
The Family Law Division currently lists Riverside Family Law Courthouse, Blythe Courthouse, Larson Justice Center in Indio and Menifee Justice Center. The filing or hearing location matters when you send a certified-copy request.
Riverside Family Law Courthouse
4175 Main Street
Riverside, CA 92501
951-777-3147
Criminal and Traffic Searches Have an Important Identity Restriction
Riverside revised its clerk search policy on October 11, 2024. That change matters when a common name produces several criminal or traffic cases.
When date of birth or driver’s-license information may be used
The court’s policy allows an individual to request a search of their own case-history information using DOB and/or driver’s-license information after showing valid identification.
Criminal courthouse in downtown Riverside
Riverside Hall of Justice
4100 Main Street
Riverside, CA 92501
951-777-3147
The Hall of Justice currently serves criminal matters and provides a public viewing computer and a drop box.
A New Eviction Case Can Be Missing for a Valid Legal Reason
Riverside states that unlawful-detainer cases are confidential for the first 60 days. That creates a very different no-result scenario from an ordinary civil case.
The court notes an access exception for qualifying interested parties who can provide the information required under the applicable California rule, including at minimum one plaintiff name, one defendant name and the property address.
Check the Electronic Coverage Date Before Paying for Another Search
Online coverage does not begin on the same date for every courthouse or case type. An old file can exist even when the portal does not include it.
| Record group | Current published online coverage | What to do with an older case |
|---|---|---|
| Family law | Almost all cases from April 1992 | Use the court-performed records-search route when necessary. |
| Probate | Almost all cases from July 1994 | Ask whether an older file is still retained and whether retrieval is required. |
| Riverside civil | October 1991 to present | Do not use the portal cutoff as proof that no older case existed. |
| Riverside felony | January 1990 to present | Use a court search when the matter predates electronic coverage. |
| Riverside misdemeanor | January 1994 to present | Confirm location and filing period before ordering a search. |
| Banning felony / misdemeanor | November 1996 to present | Older cases may need direct court assistance. |
| Mid-County criminal | December 1996 to present | Use the correct geographic region when asking the clerk. |
| Indio felony | May 1990 to present | Use Larson/Desert-region assistance for older matters as appropriate. |
| Blythe / Indio / Palm Springs misdemeanors | September 1993 to present | Do not apply Riverside-city misdemeanor dates to Desert-region files. |
The court’s current page has an early-Indio civil date conflict
The official coverage page presently lists both May 1991 and September 1993 as Indio Civil starting points. If your research turns on an Indio civil filing from that early period, do not pick one date and assume it is definitive.
Docket First, Document Second, Certification Last
These are three separate levels of access. Using them in the right order reduces both cost and confusion.
Find the filing title, filing date and case event. This helps you identify the exact document.
Open or purchase the non-confidential document when remote access is permitted.
Use the court-copy process when an agency or other recipient requires official certification.
Current Public Access document-download pricing
| Part of document | Charge | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| First 5 pages | $1 per page | Maximum $50 per document |
| Additional pages | $0.50 per page | |
| Purchased download availability | Available for 30 days | |
If a docket term is unclear, check the verified internal Court Records Glossary before interpreting the result.
Choose Between a Court Search, Ordinary Copy and Certified Copy
A records search, a copy request and certification are different services. Asking for the wrong one can add cost without solving the user’s actual need.
Find the case: use the free case-number search or a paid name search to identify the correct docket.
Name the document: write down the exact decree, order, judgment or filing and its date.
Ask what proof is required: ordinary, certified, exemplified and electronic access are not interchangeable.
Send the request to the proper courthouse: Riverside directs certified-copy requests to the courthouse where the case is being heard.
What the 2026 official fee schedule says
| Record service | 2026 published fee | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Preparing a court-record copy | $0.50 per page | Clerk-prepared copy of a record, paper or proceeding on file. |
| Search longer than 10 minutes | $15 | Court staff records/file/microfiche search charge. |
| General certification | $40 | Certification of a paper, record or proceeding on file. |
| Certified dissolution record — ordinary applicant | $15 | Specific fee for a certified marriage/domestic-partnership dissolution record. |
| Certified dissolution record — public agency | $10 | Separate statutory public-agency amount. |
| Exemplification | $50 | Higher authentication when the recipient specifically requires it. |
| Off-site file/record retrieval | $32 per file | Can apply when a retained file must be retrieved from off-site storage. |
Certified-copy submission routes
Riverside’s Public Access instructions say certified copies for civil, family law, probate, criminal or traffic records can be requested using local form RI-MC011. The court currently accepts the form through eSubmit or by mail/drop box to the proper courthouse with the required payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
For non-exempt eSubmit transactions, the court currently lists a $2 transaction fee. eSubmit accepts up to 15 documents and one case per submission.
What the $15 Court-Performed Records Search Does — and Does Not Do
When Public Access does not find an expected case, Riverside lets you request a search by court staff. The current charge is $15 per name.
Use it when
- The case may predate online coverage.
- You have a reliable party name and approximate year but no case number.
- The self-service portal did not locate an expected case.
- You need the case number before requesting an older file or copy.
Do not use it when
- You already know the case number.
- You simply need an available electronic document.
- You need certified copies rather than a search result.
Older, Purged, Sealed and Off-Site Records Require Different Next Steps
A failed electronic search can reflect the court’s retention system rather than a spelling problem.
Use the published coverage date to decide whether a clerk search is more sensible than another portal attempt.
The 2026 schedule lists an off-site file/record retrieval fee of $32 per file.
Riverside says records are routinely purged under authorized retention rules.
The Public Access portal does not expose sealed and confidential case information.
The court separately warns that certain cannabis arrest or conviction records must be destroyed under California law.
Do not treat absence from an ordinary public search as proof that a juvenile proceeding never occurred.
Checking a Hearing Date? Use the Right Calendar Tool
Public Access can show current and future calendar dates up to seven days. Riverside also runs a dedicated eCalendar for Criminal, Traffic and Probate departments that currently shows the present day and the next three business days.
Three Downtown Riverside Courthouses Are Only Blocks Apart — but Serve Different Matters
Searching the correct case and then driving to the wrong Main Street building is an avoidable mistake.

Public viewing computers and drop boxes
The court’s current location pages show public viewing computers and drop boxes at the Riverside Family Law Courthouse, Riverside Hall of Justice and Riverside Historic Courthouse.
Current clerk-office hours for those downtown locations are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., excluding court holidays. General clerk telephone hours are currently 7:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Countywide phone routing
General department assistance for these court regions.
General assistance for listed Desert-region locations.
The current court phone directory publishes this traffic line across several regions.
Useful when telephone waits are long; use the official court web-chat service.
Need a Marriage Certificate Instead of a Divorce Record?
A divorce decree and a marriage certificate are maintained by different offices.
Search the family-law case through Riverside Superior Court and request the appropriate dissolution record from the court.
Use the Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder when the marriage license was issued in Riverside County.
The County Clerk-Recorder currently lists both public and confidential marriage certificates at $19.
Advanced Researchers Have a Separate Index-Purchase Option
The 2026 court fee schedule separately lists Name and Case Number Indexes at $16 per index per month per case type. This is different from buying a $1 Public Access name-search credit.
If the Case Is an Appeal or Federal Matter, Leave the County Trial-Court Portal
California appeal
The California Appellate Courts Case Information system covers Supreme Court and Court of Appeal cases. It can search by appellate or trial-court case number, party, attorney or case caption.
Federal case
Federal cases use PACER rather than Riverside Superior Court Public Access. The Central District of California operates its Riverside federal courthouse at:
George E. Brown, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse
3470 Twelfth Street
Riverside, CA 92501
951-328-4450
No Case Found? Diagnose the Failure Before Paying Again
Use this sequence instead of repeatedly purchasing name credits.
If you do not know the case number, a case-number search cannot discover it. Use the name index.
Compare filing dates, case types and party context rather than forcing a match.
The case may predate the published electronic starting date for its courthouse and category.
An unlawful-detainer case can be confidential during its first 60 days.
A legally destroyed record will not reappear because you change the spelling.
Sealed, confidential and some juvenile information is not available through ordinary remote access.
Recovery checklist
- Confirm whether you know the complete case number.
- If not, use one paid name-index search.
- Save all plausible case numbers and filing dates.
- Confirm the case category and courthouse region.
- Compare the filing year with Riverside’s electronic coverage dates.
- For a recent eviction, apply the 60-day access rule.
- For criminal or traffic records, respect the court’s identifying-information restrictions.
- Check whether the case could have been purged under the retention schedule.
- Use the $15 court-performed search when a retained older case is still expected.
- Move to California appellate search or PACER when the matter is not a Riverside Superior Court trial-level case.
“I am looking for a ______ case involving ______ from approximately ______. I could not locate it within the published online coverage. Can you tell me whether I should submit a records-search request, whether an older retained file may require off-site retrieval, and which courthouse would hold it?”
Do Not Turn a Search Result Into a Conclusion It Does Not Support
| What you see | What it may establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Name-index result | A matching name is associated with a case. | That the party is definitely the person you intended to find. |
| Criminal charge | A charge was filed. | That the defendant was convicted. |
| Civil complaint | A claim or lawsuit was filed. | That the allegation was proved or judgment entered for the plaintiff. |
| ROA entry | A case event or document was recorded. | That the underlying document can be remotely downloaded. |
| Online document | An eligible electronic copy is available. | That the copy is certified. |
| No result | The particular search did not produce a match. | That no case ever existed. |

Frequently Asked Questions About Riverside Court Records
Is a Riverside County court-record search free?
A case-number search is currently free. A search by a person’s or organization’s name uses paid search credit. Document downloads and certified copies have separate charges.
Do I need an account even if I already know the case number?
Yes. Riverside’s Public Access portal requires an online account to access the system. The case-number lookup itself does not carry a search charge.
How much is one Riverside name search?
The current self-service price starts at $1 for one name-search credit. The court also sells multi-search packages.
Do I have to pay again to open every case found under one name?
Not immediately. Riverside currently says that after locating a name, you may view up to 10 cases for that name before another name search is required.
How far back are Riverside divorce cases searchable online?
The court says almost all family-law cases from April 1992 forward are available through electronic search. Older retained matters may require a court-performed search.
Why can’t I see a recently filed eviction?
Riverside states that unlawful-detainer cases are confidential for the first 60 days, subject to the applicable statutory access exceptions.
Can the clerk use a date of birth to identify someone else’s criminal case?
Under Riverside’s revised policy, clerk staff do not narrow or verify a third party’s criminal or traffic case using date-of-birth or driver’s-license information. A person may request their own case history using such information after showing valid identification.
What is the difference between the Register of Actions and Documents?
The Register of Actions is the chronological docket showing filings and dates. Documents are the actual electronic files that Riverside is permitted to make remotely available. A docket entry does not guarantee a downloadable file.
What is the Riverside Superior Court phone number?
The court currently lists 951-777-3147 for Riverside and several western/mid-county locations and 760-393-2617 for Indio, Palm Springs and Blythe. General clerk phone hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m., excluding court holidays.
How much is a certified Riverside divorce decree?
The 2026 Riverside Superior Court fee schedule lists a certified marriage or domestic-partnership dissolution record at $15 when requested by an applicant other than a public agency. Confirm the current fee when ordering because court schedules can change.
